Last night I had a particularly strange dream:
I was wearing a bright yellow raincoat and walked into an ultra-luxurious wedding venue.
All the guests were dressed formally and beautifully, but there I was, in a plastic raincoat, rustling and clattering.
No one laughed at me, but everyone stared—and I didn’t feel embarrassed at all. I just stood there, acting like nothing was wrong.

Waking up, I sat on my bed, utterly baffled: “What on earth does this dream mean? Why a raincoat? Why yellow?”
I’m no dream expert, but this dream was so vivid I couldn’t help but want to figure it out.
So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and become an “amateur dream interpreter.”
I dug out my “Dream Journal”
I have a habit—whenever I have a particularly vivid dream, I jot it down in my notebook.
Not neatly written, just scribbles and a few keywords.
Flipping through it, I was startled:
Turns out I often dream about “wearing the wrong clothes”!
- Once I dreamed my shoes vanished at work, leaving me running barefoot through the office
- Another time, I went grocery shopping in a Superman cape, and the cashier even waved at me.
- Yet another dream had me attending an important meeting in my pajamas while everyone else wore suits—me alone in my fluffy robe.
I used to laugh these dreams off as silly.
But this “wedding + raincoat” combo made me wonder: maybe clothes really are trying to tell me something in my dreams.
I searched online for “expert interpretations,” but the more I looked, the more confused I got
I opened my computer and searched “What does dreaming about a raincoat mean?” and “What does dreaming about wearing the wrong clothes represent?”
The results? Wildly varied and contradictory:
- Some say a raincoat symbolizes “protecting oneself”—maybe I’m afraid of something
- Some said raincoats symbolize “hiding emotions”—not wanting others to see the real me
- Others claimed yellow signifies “warning” or ‘anxiety’
- Yet another interpretation suggested “wearing a raincoat at a wedding” was “inappropriate,” representing a disrupted life rhythm
What about the shoes?
Some said losing shoes meant “feeling insecure,” while others say it signifies “desire for freedom”—who should I listen to?
My head was spinning, so I just closed the page.
The experts all sound “plausible,” but when applied to me, something feels off.
I decided to try a different approach: ignore the experts and look within myself
Instead of fixating on “universal interpretations,” I returned to my dream and asked myself:
1. What did that raincoat feel like to wear?
I remember clearly—it was stiff, made of plastic, rustling with every movement, uncomfortable against my skin.
This made me wonder: Have I been “pushing through” lately?
Work piled up, but I pretended everything was fine, grinding on like wearing an ill-fitting plastic coat.
2. How did others see me? How did I react?
Everyone in the dream stared at me, yet I felt completely at ease, not the least bit flustered.
Doesn’t this mirror my recent state?
Even though the project was a mess, when my boss asked, I smiled and said “No problem,” while inside I was panicking.
—I was “pretending to be calm,” just like wearing the raincoat and acting like nothing was wrong.
3. Why the “wedding” setting?
Weddings are formal, joyous occasions where everyone watches.
And I show up in a raincoat—does this mean I feel “unprepared”?
Lately, I’ve been putting off a crucial project, afraid to start it. Scared of messing up, scared people will see I don’t really know what I’m doing.
Using the same method, I unraveled another old dream
I once dreamed of wearing fluffy pajamas to an interview.
Research said “pajamas = vulnerability” and “interview = pressure,” combining to mean “you fear judgment.”
Spot on!
At that time, I’d just taken on a new task with zero experience. My hands shook during meetings—I felt like I was standing naked on stage.
The pajamas in my dream were the literal embodiment of that inner voice whispering, “I’m not ready.”
The Real “Aha Moment”: The Dream of Changing Clothes
Another dream stands out vividly:
I was in a room frantically changing clothes, one after another, unable to find anything that fit.
Research said this symbolized ‘indecision’ or “searching for my identity.”
Spot on!
Back then, I agonized daily: Should I take this project? How should I respond to that client? Even deciding lunch took half an hour.
In my dream, I was “trying on different identities,” searching for a comfortable state.
But Not All “Expert Interpretations” Worked for Me
I tried forcing expert explanations onto my dreams—and crashed and burned.
Like when I dreamed of wearing a blue dress—experts say blue symbolizes “calm” and “smooth communication.”
But in reality? I’d just spilled coffee on that dress that day and was heartbroken.
Its appearance in my dream wasn’t some “symbolic meaning” at all—it was purely my brain “replaying the day’s misfortune”!
I finally understood one thing:
Dreams aren’t code books where you can look up “raincoat = protection” or “shoes = freedom.”
Dreams are your brain speaking to you through images—about your recent life, emotions, and stress.
How do I view that “wedding raincoat dream” now?
I no longer obsess over “what yellow means” or “what the raincoat symbolizes.”
I just ask myself:
- Have I been pushing through lately? → Yes
- Have I been avoiding a certain project? → Yes
- Have I been pretending everything’s fine? → Yes
That raincoat was really just my inner “protective suit”—
I knew I wasn’t ready, but I didn’t want anyone to see it, so I put on a shell that “looked like it could withstand the storm.”
The dream is reminding me: Stop pretending. What you must face, you cannot avoid.
Your Dream Interpretation Toolkit (No memorization needed—just use it)
Next time you dream about clothes, don’t rush to search for “standard answers” online.
Try asking yourself these 4 questions:
- Was the garment comfortable to wear?
→ Itchy? Tight? Heavy? → Might mean you’re stressed or feeling constrained lately - Did you choose this garment in the dream, or were you forced to wear it?
→ Forced → You might feel your life is being dictated by others
→ Chosen → You could be actively trying on a new role - How did others react to you wearing this? How did you respond?
→ Shy → Fear of judgment
→ Confident → You’re building a new identity - Do you actually own this garment? Have you worn/washed/lost it recently?
→ If yes, the dream might just be your “brain organizing memories”—not necessarily symbolic
Honest takeaway
I’m not a dream expert, and I never will be.
But I now understand: Dreams aren’t prophecies—they’re mirrors.
They reflect your unspoken emotions, unresolved stress, and unfaced issues.
Clothes, shoes, colors, settings—these are all “props” your brain selects to transform abstract feelings into “visible” images.
Will that bright yellow raincoat appear in my dreams again?
Maybe it will.
But next time it shows up, I won’t panic.
I’ll tell myself: “Oh, I’m avoiding that project again, right? Alright, I’ll start working on it today.”
Try this yourself—
Don’t rush to look up “what dreaming about XX means.” First ask yourself: “Have I been feeling this way lately?”
Your dreams understand you better than any expert.
